Protect Them! (Giraffes)

Giraffes

Giraffes are well known for their long legs and neck. Males, called bulls, can reach up to eighteen feet tall. Females, called cows, can be as tall as fourteen feet. Their legs and neck can be six feet or more, but their necks are six hundred pounds alone. They have a unique coat, which can be shaped as squares, oak leaves, and many other different types of patterns. A giraffe's foot can be about one foot long! They have a purple tongue that is over eighteen inches long. Their tongue is purple because it prevents it from getting sunburned as they constantly eat. Giraffes have two hairy horns at the top of their heads called ossicones. Their heart can be about two feet long and an average of twenty-five pounds. Giraffes are very heavy. They can weigh from about 1750 pounds to 2180 pounds.

Predators

I, personally, love giraffes. I am very fond of them. They are harmless. Unless they are being attacked. Then they would use their powerful kick to scare away their predators. Adult giraffes are too large to be attacked, but young giraffes are the perfect size. Only twenty-five to fifty percent of calves reach adulthood. Others are victims of predators. Their predators include lions, crocodiles, leopards, and even humans. They are hunted for their meat, tail, and coat. Their tail is used to make good luck bracelets, fly whisks, and string. Their coat is used for shield coverings.

Female giraffes give birth standing up. This means that the calf falls more than 5 feet to the ground, head first. When they are born, calves can be about 6 feet tall and 155 pounds. They can stand up for the first time in thrity minutes and can run with their mother in the wild by the ten hour mark. Young giraffes grow one inch a day. They spend 4 to 5 months in nursery. Then, they are off on their own. Giraffes can live up to 25 years in the wild and 28 years in captivity.

Conclusion

Even though giraffes are not near endangered, we still need to protect them. They have a lot of predators that have the desire to attack and kill and animal like the giraffe. They are like humans in many ways. They have a heart, they breathe, they have children, and many other things just like us. We should try out very best to protect them. Just like policemen and firemen help us. Don't start tomorrow or in a week, start now.
